Rolling over

By Felix, 7 weeks old

I am learning to roll over. I like to lie on my back on my play mat. There are some toy animals hanging down that I like to play with. There is also a mirror off to one side. Sometimes I try to reach for the mirror to get a better look. Then I roll over onto my side. Sometimes I roll right over onto my front which is very confusing.

I do not like rolling onto my front because it is very hard to roll back. Sometimes I can roll from my front onto my back but that is confusing too.

Smiling baby

By Felix, 7 weeks old

When I first came into the world everything was different and noisy and cold and I did not like it. Then I found some things that I do like. I like it when Mum feeds me or holds me. I also like it when Dad smiles at me. So now I smile too.

In the first few days after I was born I was trying out how my face works. Sometimes I smiled a bit but I also frowned and also made fun shapes with my mouth. But now I smile when I see something I like. I even smile at Jay. I think he likes me because he hugs me a lot even though he is a bit rough sometimes. I smile when Mum or Dad pick me up because I like it. They must like it too because they always smile back at me. Sometimes when I smile at Dad he runs away to get a camera. But he always takes too long and I get tired. So when he finally takes a photo of me smiling it looks like this:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, …

By Jay, 20 months old

I can count up to ten. Now I can count lots of things but my favourite thing to count is steps. Mum and Dad and Felix and I are all staying at my Nana’s house right now because we are on holiday. I like staying with Nana because she likes to tickle me and also because she has stairs. I knock on the door to the stairs and then when Dad opens the door I climb up the stairs and count them as I go. One! Two! Three! Four! Five! Six! Eight! Nine! Ten!

Sometimes there’s another number that Dad uses when he counts but I can’t remember what it is. Maybe if I could remember it I could count more things.

Putting words together

By Jay, 20 months old

For the last two months I have learned to say new words every day. Now I have learned how to put them together. Here are some of the things I like to say.

Fall down! — This is when I fall over when I am playing with Dad. Also when a leaf comes down from a tree or I build a stack of blocks and knock it over. Mostly it happens to my food when I am eating.

Up please — I say this to Mum or Dad when I don’t want to be on the ground any more. This happens when I get tired or if I am scared of something.

Boo!

By Jay, 19 months old

I like to hide. The best thing about hiding is that after you finish hiding you can come out and say boo! When I was little I used to hold up my hands to my face so nobody could see me and then take my hands away and say “ba-boo”. Mum and Dad were always so surprised. But now there are lots of other times when I can say boo.

Where is Jay?After I have a bath Dad dries me with a towel. But sometimes I take the towel and use it to hide. I put the towel over myself and sit very still. Dad doesn’t know where I have gone! Then i pull the towel off and say “boo!” and Dad laughs.
