Bending the rules

By Jay, 29 months old

There are lots of things that I am not allowed to do. But whenever Mum and Dad tell me that I shouldn’t do something, I can usually find a way to do it anyway.

I’m not allowed to stand on the sofa. A few days ago Dad told me again: “No standing on the sofa please.” I said “Want to jump on the sofa!” Dad thought for a while and said “No standing or jumping on the sofa or any other chair or table.”

It’s lucky that we have a very low sofa in the lounge room. I ran straight to the sofa and put one foot on the sofa and one foot on the floor. Then I hopped my foot up and down on the floor. So I was only half standing and half jumping on the sofa. Dad didn’t say not to do that.

Another thing I am not allowed to do is throw things inside. If I throw toys inside then Mum and Dad take them away. But I am allowed to throw balls outside. Today was a hot day so the windows and doors were open. So I stood outside on the deck and threw my blue ball in through the door. Mum asked me how the ball got inside and I told her “Ball came in all by itself!”

When Dad got home I stood out on the deck and threw the ball into the kitchen through the open window. They didn’t say not to do that. I thought that was funny but Dad took the ball away from me anyway.
