Pick me up

By Felix, 14 months old

I love it when Jay carries me around! I only just learned how to walk but now I have found an even better way of getting around. Jay has always liked giving me hugs. Sometimes he gives me such a big hug that we fall over and he ends up sitting on my head. I don’t like that so much. But sometimes now Jay hugs me and picks me up and carries me around. I like it when he comes up behind me and picks me up because then I can see where we are going. Jay picks me up and carries me in to see Mum and Dad and I give them a big smile and they give us a big smile and then Jay puts me down very gently. Or sometimes he just puts me down. Anyway it is a bit slower that walking but it is much more exciting.

Take off your pants

By Felix, 13 months old

I can understand a lot of things people tell me even though I can’t say much yet. Tonight Jay was in the bath and I wanted to get in too so I started trying to climb into the bath. Dad saw me and said “No Felix; you have to take off your pants first.” I looked at him and then I reached down and grabbed my pants and tried to pull them down. (And then I fell over.)

Dad looked surprised that I understood what he said. He gave me a hug and said that I was clever as he helped me get undressed for the bath. As he was talking I pointed and said “Ba! Ba!” so he picked me up and put me in the bath with Jay. I’m glad that Dad understands the things I say too.

Words and actions

By Felix, 13 months old

These are a few of my favourite words:

Milk. Dad. Mum. Jay. Door. Toast. Book. Bubble. Shoe. No. Hot. Bye bye.

I know these words and can mostly say them properly and I like to point to the thing when I say the word. Especially Mum and Dad because they point back at me. When Mum is cooking at the stove I know that it is hot. I say “hot” and move my hand in front of my mouth because that is sign language for “hot”. And in the morning when Dad goes to the front door I wave my hand and say “bye bye” because he is going to work. Then everybody else waves and says bye bye too because they like to copy me.

There are some other words that I sort of know but I can’t always remember them and can’t say them properly:

Taking steps

By Felix, 13 months old

I have started taking steps by myself. I always like to walk around the living room while holding on to the sofa or the table. But yesterday I tried taking a step without holding on to anything. It worked well though I only took one step at a time and then I had to grab something like the table or Mum or the wall so I didn’t fall over. Mum saw me and thought I was very clever though.

Then today in the morning I was playing in the kitchen after breakfast and I walked a few steps around the kitchen island. Mum and Dad both saw me and they both smiled at me and said nice things. I don’t think Jay saw me which is a shame because the reason I am learning to walk is that I want to be more like him.

A conversation

By Felix, 13 months old

I started a conversation with Dad this morning. I woke up very hungry when it was still dark. But I cried so Dad came in and took me out to the kitchen. As soon as I saw the fridge I had a good idea: I said “milk!” (When I say it it sounds a bit like “mook” though.) Milk, milk, milk. Dad opened the fridge and started to get me some milk. But I had a bit more to say so I pointed to my nose and said “nose”. Except it sounds a bit like “nooow”. Dad smiled and pointed to his nose too so I did it again a few times and I also said milk a few more times. Then I had some nice milk. I think Dad liked our little talk about milk and noses. But afterwards he still said it was too early and he put me back to bed.

Felix turns 1

By Felix, one year old today

Felix on his first birthday

Today was my first birthday. It was fun because I got lots of presents and my Nana and Pixi and James and Duncan were there and there was a great chocolate cake and everybody sang me a song.

Stand up! Sit down!

By Felix, 11 months old

I am nearly one year old and I am learning to crawl and use my legs and stand. I like to pull myself up on chairs and tables and cruise around them a little bit. Now I have found that I can stand up all by myself. I crawl out into the middle of the floor, and then just stand straight up. If Mum and Dad are nearby then they hold out their hands to me and ask me for a hug. So I stand there and look at the floor, and I look at Mum and Dad, and I look out of the window, and I think about taking a step. But then I get tired so I just sit down again. Mum and Dad always look disappointed when I do that. If they want a hug then why don’t they just walk over to me?

Tooth three for me

By Felix, 10 months old

Felix’s third toothTooth number three came today. It has been hurting for a while but now Mum and Dad can see it. It is at the top right under my nose. It feels really big in my mouth. And I think there are two more teeth on either side of it that will come out soon.

Sitting down

By Felix, 9 months old

I have had a hard week because I learned to stand up but I kept falling over when I get tired. But now I can sit down nicely and it doesn’t hurt. When I get tired of standing up I can just collapse and go plop back down on my bottom. Then I can have a rest and crawl over to the sofa and stand up again. And then go plop again and then rest and then stand up again and keep going like this until lunchtime.  And if I bounce enough while I am standing up I get tired enough to have a nice afternoon nap which makes Mum very happy.

Tooth number two

By Felix, 9 months old

I have got another tooth to go with my first tooth! It is right beside the first one in the bottom front right of my mouth. I am glad that it came because now my mouth looks more even and I can smile and look cute instead of looking funny. Actually the teeth are pretty small so nobody sees them unless they tickle me and I laugh and open my mouth. Dad does this a lot. And I am going to visit my Nana soon and I bet she will tickle me even more. I hope she likes my teeth.
