How tall will I be?

By Jay, 2 years old

I am 90 centimetres tall now and I weigh about 14.5 kilograms. Dad says that some people think that a two-year-old boy will become twice as tall when he grows up. This means that I will be 180 centimetres tall when I am an adult.

I hope this is not true because then I will still be shorter than Dad!

Now I am 2

By Jay, 2 years old today

Jay's 2nd birthday cakeI am twice as old as I used to be. I have been 1 for almost as long as I can remember but now I am 2. It was really great turning 2 because birthdays mean cake and because I was 2 I had 2 cakes. I had one cake on Thursday morning at Playcentre which was blue with yummy gummy sharks and jelly fish on it. And another chocolate cake at my birthday party on Sunday shaped like the number two covered in “farties” (I mean smarties) and mini marshmallows. Of course I also get to blow out candles and everyone sings the special song for me.

I wish I had a birthday every week.

Sing Star

By Jay, 23 months old

Even when I was really little I liked listening to Mum and Dad sing to me. They sing all kinds of fun songs. Now I can sing the songs myself. My favourite is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”. When I go to my swimming lessons Dad tries to get me to swim on my back by waving his hand high over my head and singing it. It’s my favourite song.

Now I can sing it with all the words and the tune and even do hand actions too. I can hold my hand up like a star and make a diamond out of my two hands. I surprised Dad a while ago when he was dressing me because I stood up and sang the whole song even though he had never heard me sing it before.

Jay hugs

By Felix, 13 weeks old

I like Jay because he gives me hugs. I get lots of hugs from Mum and Dad too but Jay hugs are the most fun because they are very exciting. Sometimes Jay grabs me in a big hug and then falls over and then I fall over too and we end up rolling on the ground. Sometimes he sits on me and hugs my head. It can be a bit sore when he hugs me like this. But sometimes he just gives me a nice gentle cuddle and a kiss. So even though he is a bit rough sometimes I always go back for more nice hugs.

My brother looks like me!

By Jay, 21 months old

Today Mum was showing me some baby photos. She asked me who was in the pictures. I said “Felix!” but Mum said they were really pictures of me! Mum says that a long time ago I was a really small baby just like Felix is now. I looked just like Felix does except I think I was a little bit thinner than he is. Maybe one day he will look like me. He’s so lucky.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, …

By Jay, 20 months old

I can count up to ten. Now I can count lots of things but my favourite thing to count is steps. Mum and Dad and Felix and I are all staying at my Nana’s house right now because we are on holiday. I like staying with Nana because she likes to tickle me and also because she has stairs. I knock on the door to the stairs and then when Dad opens the door I climb up the stairs and count them as I go. One! Two! Three! Four! Five! Six! Eight! Nine! Ten!

Sometimes there’s another number that Dad uses when he counts but I can’t remember what it is. Maybe if I could remember it I could count more things.

18 months old

By Jay, 1½ years old today

I am 18 months old today. Mum and Dad wanted to see how big I am so they tried to weigh and measure me. I don’t like to stand still so it took them a long time. It was fun when Dad chased me around my Nana’s house with a tape measure. In the end this is what they decided:

Height: 82 cm

Weight: 12 kg

Cute: yes

My first birthday

By Jay, one year old today

Today was a very special day because it was my first birthday.

Jay's presentI knew it was special right from the beginning because both Mum and Dad came to say good morning when I woke up and were very smiley and nice and gave me lots of kisses. My friend Flint came over to visit with my first birthday present — some great blue paper which I had lots of fun tearing up and waving around.

Mum took me to be weighed and measured by the Plunket nurse Faye, who also said I was very clever because I was standing up so well and talking a lot.

Pitter patter of tiny feet?

By Jay, 10 months old

Apparently before I was born lots of people told Mum and Dad that soon there would be the the pitter patter of tiny feet. But now that I am have starting crawling with one leg tucked up under me (more like a bum shuffle really) Mum says it sounds more like thump, bump, bump, thump, bump, bump. Only babies that have houses with wooden floor boards seem to crawl this way. I think it is because the floor boards are so slippery.

I wonder if I will be able to pitter patter before my feet stop being tiny?

My nicknames

By Jay, 10 months old

Mum and Dad like to call me lots of different names. Sometimes it depends on what I am doing at the time, but sometimes I think maybe they just forget my real name. Here are some of the names they call me.

Jaybird, Jay Boy, Boodle Boy, Golden Boy, Milkman, Munchkin, Limpet, Little Monkey, Sweetie, Cheeky, Cutie.

I like these funny names even though I don’t know what they mean. But Mum and Dad also call me Jay, and I know what that means. It means me!
