Fly me to the moon

By Jay, 2½ years old

Mum pointed out the moon in the sky tonight. I looked at it because I like the moon and I showed it to Felix. He likes the moon too. Then I had some ideas about the moon which I told to Mum and Dad and Felix:

If you could hold on to a kite you could go high up in the sky, very very high, and then pick up the moon and put it into a bag. Then a bird could go fly, fly, fly up high and if it had hands it could take the moon or if it couldn’t reach the moon it could go to a moon shop where there would be lots of cheaper moons.

Mum and Dad listened very carefully to my story. I think they liked it. Felix didn’t listen though, he just pointed at the moon and said “moon! moon!” But that’s OK because he’s only little.

Take off your pants

By Felix, 13 months old

I can understand a lot of things people tell me even though I can’t say much yet. Tonight Jay was in the bath and I wanted to get in too so I started trying to climb into the bath. Dad saw me and said “No Felix; you have to take off your pants first.” I looked at him and then I reached down and grabbed my pants and tried to pull them down. (And then I fell over.)

Dad looked surprised that I understood what he said. He gave me a hug and said that I was clever as he helped me get undressed for the bath. As he was talking I pointed and said “Ba! Ba!” so he picked me up and put me in the bath with Jay. I’m glad that Dad understands the things I say too.

Words and actions

By Felix, 13 months old

These are a few of my favourite words:

Milk. Dad. Mum. Jay. Door. Toast. Book. Bubble. Shoe. No. Hot. Bye bye.

I know these words and can mostly say them properly and I like to point to the thing when I say the word. Especially Mum and Dad because they point back at me. When Mum is cooking at the stove I know that it is hot. I say “hot” and move my hand in front of my mouth because that is sign language for “hot”. And in the morning when Dad goes to the front door I wave my hand and say “bye bye” because he is going to work. Then everybody else waves and says bye bye too because they like to copy me.

There are some other words that I sort of know but I can’t always remember them and can’t say them properly:

A conversation

By Felix, 13 months old

I started a conversation with Dad this morning. I woke up very hungry when it was still dark. But I cried so Dad came in and took me out to the kitchen. As soon as I saw the fridge I had a good idea: I said “milk!” (When I say it it sounds a bit like “mook” though.) Milk, milk, milk. Dad opened the fridge and started to get me some milk. But I had a bit more to say so I pointed to my nose and said “nose”. Except it sounds a bit like “nooow”. Dad smiled and pointed to his nose too so I did it again a few times and I also said milk a few more times. Then I had some nice milk. I think Dad liked our little talk about milk and noses. But afterwards he still said it was too early and he put me back to bed.

Toast

By Felix, 13 months old

I like to have toast for breakfast. This morning Dad took me into the kitchen and put me into my chair. I knew that it was breakfast time so I said “toast“. Mum heard me say it and told Dad. And then she made me some toast. Mum is great.

Felix’s first words

By Felix, one year old

I said my first proper words today. Sometimes Mum and Dad say words and I repeat them, like “Mum” or “Bubble”. But today I was lying on my change table and I pointed up to my buzzy bee mobile and said “bee“. Mum and Dad smiled and pointed to the other side and asked me what it was. I told them: “door“.

At dinnertime we eat outside on the deck. Often birds fly overhead, which is very exciting. My eyes and mouth open very very wide and I say “bir! bir!”

Oooh!

By Felix, 3 months old

I can make some different noises like crying and laughing when different things happen to me. But other people like Jay and Mum and Dad can talk and say all kinds of different words. I can not talk yet but I have started trying to use my voice more. Today I was saying “ooh” to Dad. He seemed to like it so I kept doing it. “Oooh!”
