Tongue tie

By Felix, 11 weeks old

When I was born I had a tongue tie. My tongue was stuck to the bottom of my mouth. Mum says that it is common for a newborn baby like me to have a tongue tie but it usually goes away after a while. Mum didn’t even know about mine until a nurse noticed it when I was about 6 weeks old.

My tongue tie was making it hard for me to eat. When Mum was feeding me it was hard to get my head in the right place so I could swallow the milk. Also, the tongue tie could make it hard for me to learn to talk. So when Mum found out about the tongue tie she took me to a doctor to fix it.

It was easy to fix the tongue tie. The doctor just cut the piece of skin that attached my tongue to my mouth. It was very quick and it only hurt a little bit. Mum was there so I didn’t cry very much. And since then it has been easier to eat!

Molar teeth

By Jay, 16 months old

Ouch! For weeks I have had big painful lumps in my mouth. Sometimes they are OK but sometimes they hurt and make me cry. I have to get medicine from Mum to make it better.

But a few days ago the lumps started turning into teeth! Now I have four big new teeth called molars. There might even be more than four. It’s hard to see. Anyway they are great for eating steak and carrots and lots of other yummy food.

There are still some spaces in my mouth where maybe other teeth could go. I wonder when they will come. I hope they don’t hurt as much.

Milk

By Jay, 15 months old

Ever since I can remember, I used to drink my milk directly from Mum. It was really nice because I’d get a cuddle at the same time as a nice drink. But since then I have grown up a bit. I have been eating other food for months now, and also drinking other drinks. I also like to run around more now so I don’t always have time to stop for a milk feed. So now I still drink lots of milk, but for the last couple of weeks it has come from a big bottle in the fridge instead of Mum.

Now when I have milk, Mum or Dad put the milk in a special cup for me. Sometimes they heat it up in the microwave. I like the microwave because it makes an exciting beeping sound when the milk is ready. I always squeal and wave my arms around in case Dad didn’t hear it. Then I get to drink the nice warm milk. And even though I don’t get my milk straight from Mum any more, I don’t mind because I still get lots of cuddles.

My first haircut

By Jay, one year old

Today I went to the barber to get a haircut. I have never had a haircut before but I know Dad has them because he comes home from work with short hair sometimes. Now I know where he goes.

Jay haircut First Mum sat in a chair and a lady cut some of her hair. Mum was very brave and didn’t cry at all. Then it was my turn. Mum held me and the lady sprayed some water on my hair. That was fun! But then she started taking my hair and cutting it. It was all right but soon I got tired of it and wanted to go. And then she stopped.

Now my hair is shorter and doesn’t stick out everywhere when I get up in the morning. Also it doesn’t get tangled any more after the bath. Maybe next year if I am feeling brave I will have another haircut.

Brushing my teeth

By Jay, 11 months old

I have a new brush for my teeth. Every night Dad dresses me in my pyjamas and then takes me into the bathroom. He puts the toothbrush into my mouth and wiggles it around. Of course I chew on it, because it’s fun and that’s what I do whenever anything is in my mouth. But Dad says I shouldn’t chew, and instead he tries to brush my teeth with it. I only have 8 teeth, so it doesn’t take long. I don’t know why he does it anyway.

I have seen Mum and Dad brush their own teeth. It takes a long time because they have so many teeth. But they never seem to chew the brush. They don’t know what they are missing.

My daily routine

By Jay, 10 months old

For a long time I didn’t have much of a routine during my day and night. I would keep getting hungry and waking up and Mum would feed me and then I would be tired during the day. But now that I sleep all through the night, here is what I do every day.

7am: Wake up and call out to Mum and Dad. Dad comes in and picks me up. He takes me to Mum who feeds me milk.

7.30am: Dad changes my nappy. Then I go in and play in the lounge.

A surprise tooth

By Jay, 9 months old

Yesterday I surprised Mum and Dad with a new tooth. It is a little one next to my bottom two teeth. I have had five teeth for a long time, and now I have six. Six teeth! I don’t know what to do with them all. I can already eat pieces of fruit and minced meat so I don’t need this new tooth. I can’t even count up to six yet.

Actually I can’t even count up to one. I am only a baby after all.

My own room

By Jay, 9 months old

A week ago Dad put me to bed for the night in my own room. It was a bit strange and quiet and different because I have slept in Mum and Dad’s room for my whole life. I didn’t sleep very well that night. I woke up a few times and cried. Mum used to feed me when I woke up, but not this time. I was a bit worried that maybe I was all alone, but then Dad came in and told me everything was all right. That made me feel a bit better so I went back to sleep.

When it was morning I woke up and Mum and Dad weren’t there. Maybe I really was all alone? But then Dad came to get me and Mum fed me and everything was normal.

Baby yoga

By Jay, 8 months old

On Wednesdays I go with Mum to mother and baby yoga. We have been going for a few months now. Mum rolls out a big blue sheet on the floor and we do all sorts of exercises. Sometimes Mum stretches and pulls my legs and arms, and other times I just sit on the floor and play while she holds all sorts of weird positions. My favourite time is when Mum swings me around in the air, or does flip flops hanging me upside down.

I am the eldest baby at the yoga class so I try to set a good example. However, I think the littler babies are better at a lot of exercises where you are meant to sit or lie still like relaxation. I have already spent a lot of time lying still when I was a little baby so I don’t want to do that any more.

Another big tooth

By Jay, 8 months old

I am getting another tooth. This one is at the top opposite the other two teeth. It is really big. Now I can bite off big chunks of the stuff that Mum and Dad put in my mouth. There’s not much I can do with these big chunks so I usually just leave them in my mouth and spit them out later.  I can also grind this tooth against my teeth on the bottom which makes a very interesting noise.
I think I understand what teeth are good for now. I wish I had teeth in the side of my mouth. Then I could chew like Mum and Dad.
