Child lock

By Jay, 1½ years old

I was pushing buttons on the microwave oven today and after a little while the screen said “child lock” on it. Mum and Dad found it and they couldn’t make the microwave work any more. They had to go and get a book about the microwave to find out how to unlock the buttons again. “Child lock” must mean that only children can use it. That’s why I could lock it but Mum and Dad didn’t know how to unlock it. I think it’s nice that the people who made the microwave put in this special child lock just for me.

Shoes

By Jay, 17 months old

Some of Jay's shoesI have got a lot of shoes now. I still have my special first pair of proper shoes but they are getting small. I have some other nice shoes as well. I really like my shoes. When we go out, Mum and Dad ask me to get my shoes and I run as fast as I can to get them. Or if I want to go outside, I go and get my shoes and bring them to Mum so she can help me put them on. Now that the weather is warm I sometimes wear sandals instead of shoes. The sandals are good because I can almost put them on by myself.

Every time I pick up my shoes I always say the word. “Shooes!” It’s such a fun word to say. “Shooooes!”

My new shoes

By Jay, one year old

My new red walking shoesLast Wednesday my Mum bought me some new shoes. Special outside shoes for proper walking and they are red and very fun.

I felt a bit like a clown when I tried them on as they are much bigger and heavier than all my other shoes. Walking with Mum in the gardenMum took me out to the front garden the next day to practice walking in my big boy shoes. I was a bit frustrated as I kept falling over at first and it was hard to get back up. But after a little while I could walk on the grass for several metres.

Bassinet stroller

By Jay, 8 months old

I still use my first-ever stroller. It is a Swallow “Beema Q” and I liked it when I got it because it had a bassinet in it. I slept a lot when I was very little and I could sleep as much as I wanted inside the bassinet. After a little while I didn’t need the bassinet any more so Mum took it out! Then I used the stroller just as a chair with wheels on it. When I am tired Mum can still recline the seat and I can lie down and sleep.

Jolly Jumper

By Jay, 8 months old today

Mum bought me a great new toy called a Jolly Jumper. She straps me into it, then Dad hangs it in a doorway. Then I can easily stand and jump up and down just like Mum and Dad. I love it so much that I laugh and smile and it is so much fun! Dad said it’s like a baby bungee jump. But I don’t know what he is talking about.

Mum says that I am only allowed to use it for 15 minutes every day so I don’t learn bad walking habits. I don’t mind because I do get tired after 15 minutes. If walking is as much fun as jumping, then I want to learn to walk as soon as I can.

Bibs

By Jay, 11 weeks old

Bibs are the most useful items of clothing I have (apart from nappies). I have a lot of very cute shirts and body suits, but nobody can see them because I am always wearing a bib. So if you are buying bibs for your baby or somebody else’s, make sure they are cute! Here are a few other things to look out for when choosing bibs.

  • Make sure it doesn’t fasten up at the back. Some of my bibs have a velcro fastener at the back, behind my neck. The velcro irritates my neck when I lie on my back. And I spend a lot of time lying on my back. Instead, you can get bibs that fasten on the side, or even stretchy ones that Mum can just pull over my head. They are my favourite.
  • Makle sure it’s either waterproof or thick. Double layer bibs are good. I drool a lot.
  • Small bibs are OK to stop me drooling on my shirts, but a long bib is better in case I throw up. Sometimes I throw up on my socks. I’m sorry about that but I am only a little baby.

Bodysuits

By Jay, 11 weeks old

I have been wearing bodysuits a lot lately. I like them because they are comfortable and they don’t get all twisted up like singlets do. Even if I make sure Mum and Dad tuck in my singlet, it always quickly comes untucked. Then it bunches up under my arms and then I get a cold tummy.

Mum and Dad both prefer bodysuits because they also help to keep my nappy on properly. They seem to be very concerned about making sure my nappy stays on. I don’t know why.

Also, I like the bodysuits with no sleeves because they keep my tummy warm, and they are light enough for me to wear a T-shirt over the top. Dad also thinks I look very cute in them. I think I look cute in everything.
