I am currently working part-time on a Working Holiday Visa that will expire in about 1 month. I want to stay here with my (Australian) wife, but I can not find a sponsor, so we are looking into dependant visas. I went to the immigration office in Shinagawa and got a copy of the requirements.

Apparently we need a copy of her work contract in Japanese, however her contract is only in English.

Secondly, they ask for tax income / annual income statements, however she has not been working for 12 months so has not received these kind of documents yet.

Is it still possible to apply?

I would like to know, marriage certificate is required for applying visiting visa. Also, is it possible to change to dependent visa once it is approved without leaving Japan? Somebody pls help with reply…

    hi jiji,

i am a bit aware of the mumbai n chennai consulates’ functioning.
If u r applying from mumbai, u can even get the Dependent Visa within 3-4
working days. But yes, the chennai consulate will take a month for the same
and would ask u to obtain the COE from Japan first.
In both the cases, i think, you will need the Original Marriage Certificate to
prove your relationship with your wife. If you could inform your area’s Registrar
Office (Notary Office) few days before the Marriage that you need the
Certificate on an urgent basis, you can get it within a day or 2. Ofcourse you
can apply only after your marriage. I think they need :
    . Wedding Invitation card.
. a foto of ur wife n urself together.
    . a guarantor

    regards,
    zara

    oh forgot to mention….

u can get ur wife on a visiting visa. u will need the Marriage Certificate.
u can do visiting -> dependent in japan, but such a practice is actually
    discouraged.

My wife has a dependent visa. She now likes to learn some skills in an university. Her position will be a visiting student without any salary or fellowship. Does she need work permit or change of status?

My boyfriend is in the military stationed in Japan. If we were to get married here does anyone know how long it would take for me to get a spouse or dependent visa? Ive read on some sites that you just have to go to immigration and show the proof of the marriage and that they can extend your current visa (i am on a tourist visa) until your new one comes through which is usually about 2-3 weeks. Is any of this information actually accurate?

It can often take months to get a letter of eligibility for a visa — many people wait 3 or 4 months, sometimes more. Usually the only way to find out is to wait until they notify you — there’s no website you can use to see the status of your application.
