Baby sign language

By Jay, one year old

I have learned some fun signs that I can use to talk to Mum and Dad. It’s still hard for me to speak — I know a lot of words, but most of them sound like “ta” when I try to say them. Instead, I can make signs with my hands. These are the signs I can do:

  • Mum
  • Dad
  • finished
  • dog
  • cat
  • food
  • hot

Mum and Dad do other signs as well, for things like milk, drink, more and light. I can’t do those ones yet. But I like using sign language because it means I can talk to Mum and Dad even though I can’t make the words with my mouth yet.

  1. A word in your “ear” (Jay Web Log) Says:

[...] I think one day soon I will start talking. I already understand a lot of words, like “ball” and “bath” and “cat” and “Mum”. But it’s hard to say the words, so most of the time I don’t. Sometimes I just use sign language instead. But I have been practising words more and more. My favourite new word is “OFF!” This is what happens to the light when I press the light switch. It’s also what happens to my shoes when I come inside the house. It’s very useful and it’s also fun to say out loud. [...]
