Latest version is 1.1, released on 11 January 2007.
Less is more. Less is a WordPress plugin that makes reading posts more intuitive for your many readers. With Less, when readers click a (more…) link they see the full article on the screen, not just the part after the (more…).
For example, suppose you go to the Nursery Blog and look at the front page. You might see a summary of the latest post that looks like the following.
Nursery Blog
Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
(more…)
Click the more link and you see only the remainder of the post:
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again
But with Less, you’ll see the full article:
Nursery Blog
Humpty Dumpty sat on the wall
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again
This is more intuitive. (Your intuition may vary.) After I click a (more…) link, I often find myself scrolling up to make sure that I am where I think I am, and I’m not missing anything.
For an example of Less in action, see the front page of this very site, Semicolon.
Compatibility
Less has been tested successfully with WordPress versions from 1.5 to 2.2, and should also work with newer versions as they are released.
Installation
- Download the less.php file (see the end of this article for download location)
- Copy less.php into your WordPress plugins directory (wp-content/plugins).
- Log in to WordPress Admin. Go to the Plugins page and click Activate for Less
- That’s all!
For a best-of-breed fully-integrated automatic turnkey solution, combine Less with my other plugin Evermore, which automatically inserts the (more…) links for you.

PROBLEM:
Version 2.6 of Wordpress helpfully (?) offers to ‘upgrade’ your Less to someone else’s plugin that doesn’t do at all the same thing — http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/less/
Why?
Argh. Sorry about that William — I was bitten by it too! This is basically a bug in WordPress — when it checks for plugin updates, it checks based only on the name of the plugin — and there is another plugin out there called Less, which is registered at wordpress.org. (I never registered my Less because it’s so simple I never bothered.)
I will have to get a change added to WP to fix this issue, but till then I think I’m going to have to rename Less. Any suggestions?
Bennett, Does “Less” work with 2.6 of wordpress?
On the new name, how about “Full” / complete “More Full” lol ?
Cheers,
Matt
